Reading for Pleasure

Reading for pleasure has been defined by the National Literacy Trust as “reading that we do of our own free will, anticipating the satisfaction that we will get from the act of reading."

Reading for pleasure can open up new worlds for children. It gives them the opportunity to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. Research also suggest that reading for pleasure also improves children’s well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity, and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others.

At Compass Primary Academy, we ensure that all children read for pleasure daily. They have access to a set of core texts which include fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Our pupils can choose texts from their mini-libraries, a designated book area in their corridor or our library.

Our school participates annually in The Open University, Reading for Pleasure teacher groups to develop our knowledge, pedagogy and approach to reading. We at Compass Primary are Reading Teachers and being a part of this project allows us to continue to strive for all pupils to leave our school with a love of reading.
