Compass Primary School

Anti-Bullying

At Compass Primary we take bullying seriously. Pupils and parents should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported to a member of staff.

The Academy recognises that all members of the Academy community, staff and pupils alike have the right to feel safe and secure and that it has a responsibility to keep all members of its community safe from any form of bullying.

Bullying will not be tolerated.

The Brooke Weston Trust Anti-Bullying Policy can be found here.

What is bullying?

Bullying is 'Behaviour by an individual or a group, usually repeated over time that intentionally hurts another individual either physically or emotionally'.

Bullying can include: name calling, taunting, mocking, making offensive comments, kicking, hitting, taking belongings, inappropriate text messaging and electronic messaging (including through web-sites, social networking sites and instant messenger), sending offensive or degrading images by phone or via the internet, producing offensive graffiti, gossiping, excluding people from groups and spreading hurtful and untruthful rumours. Not all unpleasantness between pupils is bulling, some can be regarded as random acts of unkindness such as refusing to talk to a person.

How do we educate the children about bullying?
Each year, we as an academy take part in Anti-Bullying Week (held in the month of November). Anti-Bullying Week shines a spotlight on bullying and encourages all children, teachers and parents to take action against bullying. Over the course of Anti-Bullying Week, we hold a number of school assemblies and each class completes a number of activities designed at educating the children about what bullying is and how to deal with its different forms effectively.

Pupils also have opportunities throughout the year as part of class PSHE lessons to develop knowledge around topics such as how to keep themselves safe inside and outside of school and healthy relationships.

We actively foster an ethos for all of our children underpinned by the Protective Behaviour principles whereby they have the right to feel safe at all times. We also encourage children to recognise that they can talk with someone about anything, even if it feels awful or small.

Creating an environment where children feel secure to talk about their feelings in-turn enables our staff to be able to manage any worries that children may have and ensure that any alleged incidents of bullying can be investigated and actioned in a timely manner.

Our school Wellbeing Team operate an open-door policy and are always on hand to talk with children and provide support to families as required. The team also provide a range of key groups and individual interventions to support children in understanding and managing their feelings and emotions, whilst continuing to embed the foundations that enable children to feel safe and secure in talking about their worries.
