Compass Primary School

Modern Foreign Languages

“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

- Frank Smith

At Compass Primary, we believe that learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multicultural society, and it provides an opening to other cultures. Our Academy provides a high-quality languages education that developed pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our curriculum enables pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language.

Aims:

Our curriculum ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Implementation:

At Compass Primary Academy, we deliver - in KS2 - a Spanish curriculum. We do so because Spanish is spoken in 20 different countries around the world, with approximately 500 million Spanish speakers. It is also the fourth most widely spoken language too.

In Key Stage 2, pupils are explicitly taught Spanish for at least 20mins per week through our designated Spanish teacher. Each lesson will involve a mixture of reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, and work is recorded in Spanish books most weeks. Alongside the units, children will sing songs and play games which link to the lesson's objective.  This will ensure that Spanish lessons are meaningful and memorable.
