During the assembly, we talked about how Benjamin is a British poet and writer and that he was born in Birmingham in April, 1958. He is inspired by Jamaican culture because he is the son of Caribbean immigrants. We learnt how he was dyslexic, and left school at 13, as he couldn’t read or write; however, his resilience and determination has ensured that he is regarded as the people’s poet, selling millions of books around the world. Today he holds a handful of honorary degrees, and in 2008 he appeared in The Times list of top 50 post-war writers. This year he won at the Diverse Book Awards for his book, Windrush Child.
