Free School Meals & Pupil Premium

From September 2026, national changes were introduced to the Free School Meals programme. As part of these changes, all families were required to reapply, regardless of whether they had previously been approved or not.

Under the new arrangements, all households receiving Universal Credit are entitled to Free School Meals. There are now two types of support available:

Targeted Free School Meals

This support is available to households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less.

Children eligible under this scheme will receive:

• A free school meal every day
• Additional Pupil Premium funding for the school, which helps provide extra support, resources and opportunities for eligible pupils

Expanded Free School Meals

This support is available to households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings above £7,400.

Children eligible under this scheme will receive:

• A free school meal every day

Please note:

• Children in this category do not attract Pupil Premium funding
• Families must still complete an application so that eligibility can be assessed correctly

Every academy and school can select how they choose to use their Pupil Premium allocation, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for students. Applying for Free School Meals

We encourage all families receiving Universal Credit to apply, even if they are unsure which category they fall into. Applying ensures your child receives the support they are entitled to and helps the school identify any additional funding available.
