Performance Data

At the end of each Key Stage, children undertake tests and assessment tasks to support judgements against a national standard or expectation. These results are used to inform teachers of the strengths and areas for development for your child as they move into the next Key Stage.

At the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage (Reception) the EYFS Profile is completed. At the end of KS2 (Year 6), children will sit national tests (SATs) in May. These are externally marked and results are shared with parents in July.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

At Compasas Primary, our youngest learners grow in confidence through a rich and nurturing EYFS curriculum. Their development is supported across seven key areas:

  • Communication and Language

  • Physical Development

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSE)

  • Literacy

  • Mathematics

  • Understanding the World

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Each child is assessed against Early Learning Goals (ELGs) and is considered to have achieved a Good Level of Development by the end of Reception if they meet expected outcomes in Communication and Language, Physical Development, PSE, Literacy, and Mathematics.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Every June, our Year 1 pupils take part in the Phonics Screening Check—a short, friendly assessment to help us monitor early reading progress. Children read 40 words, including decodable ‘nonsense’ words, designed to test their phonics skills. Those who don’t reach the required score receive extra support and are reassessed in Year 2, ensuring every learner is set up for success.

Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check

In Year 4, pupils complete an online Multiplication Tables Check. This helps us assess their fluency with times tables up to 12×12—an essential foundation for success in maths. The results allow us to offer additional support where needed and celebrate progress across the cohort.

Year 6 SATs Assessment Overview – Compass Primary

In Year 6, pupils at Compass Primary take part in the Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) each May. These national assessments measure attainment in key subjects and help prepare pupils for their transition to secondary school.

The SATs include:

English – Reading Pupils complete a comprehension paper based on a selection of texts. They are assessed on their ability to retrieve information, infer meaning, and interpret vocabulary.

English – Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) This includes two components: a grammar and punctuation test, and a separate spelling task. Pupils demonstrate their understanding of sentence structure, spelling accuracy, and word classes.

Mathematics Pupils sit three papers:

  1. Arithmetic – covering calculation skills

  2. Reasoning Paper 1

  3. Reasoning Paper 2 – both focusing on applying maths to problem-solving scenarios

Writing is assessed through teacher judgement across a range of independent tasks completed throughout the year. These reflect pupils' ability to write clearly, creatively, and accurately.

At Compass Primary, we aim to make SATs preparation calm, supportive, and meaningful. The assessments allow us to celebrate individual progress and tailor future learning to each child’s needs.
